Veterans Adaptive Sports’ goal is to provide as many recreational sport opportunities as possible to serve veterans with a variety of disabilities. We plan trips coordinated with national organizations as well as plan trips unique to our member veterans. Each trip involves adaptive sports based on the venue selected.
We also provide opportunities to engage in adaptive sports all year long in Palm Beach County encouraging our member veterans to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle. Recreational sports include: biking, snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and golf. In addition, we also sponsor disabled veterans in competitive sports.
Each year trips are planned to organize a group of disabled veterans to participate in the adaptive sport(s) of the season and selected venue. The goals of these trips and associated programs for the disabled veterans are:
Trips are organized to venues where a variety of adaptive recreational sports can be undertaken. Adaptive sports include: hand cycling, mountain (hand cycling) biking, rock climbing, water skiing, jet skiing, white water rafting and scuba diving. In July 2014 VAS undertook white water rafting at the Gates of Ladore, Colorado where we lived on the Green River for 7 days and traveled over 120 miles. In July 2016, VAS held its second Summer Camp in Key Largo, Florida featuring scuba diving for newly certified handicapped divers and other veterans who dive all year round.
The annual National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic is the largest annual rehabilitation event of its kind in the world and is sponsored by Department of Veterans Affairs and the Disabled Americans Veterans. This trip is organized to introduce disabled veterans to winter adaptive sports and invite past participants who increase their skills as well as mentor the new Vets. The Clinic’s mission: to have fun, especially newly discharged vets from Iraq and Afghanistan, that life does not end with disability. On March 27-31, 2017, 342 disabled veterans participated in Snowmass Colorado.
A second winter trip is organized each year, oriented primarily for more
experienced disabled veterans. Snow skiing and other winter related adaptive sports are undertaken supported by further training and education. Snow skiing is one of the more popular adaptive sports and we take advantage of the many organizations in Florida and across the country to organize these trips. Our latest trip was to Telluride, Colorado in February, 2016 where we partnered with the staff and volunteers of the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program (TASP).
A number of our disabled veterans return annually to participate in these trips. These trips encourage our Vets to stay fit and maintain their living independence. They all look forward to networking with their fellow veterans. Our Coach Doug Tuttle puts it this way. “The veteran participants have all taken it to the next level, building upon previously learned skills, and the new participants are anxious for next year’s event.”
When veterans join Veterans Adaptive Sports, they can identify their interests and discuss options with our staff. We provide opportunities to engage in adaptive sports all year long encouraging our member veterans to stay active and live a healthy lifestyle.
We are taking advantage of the Palm Beach environment and water recreation opportunities. A number of volunteers host veterans to fish, cruise and enjoy water sports. We also assist veterans to obtain scuba certification where we encourage our divers to team up and dive regularly. There are no prerequisite skills required as our volunteers will provide training, equipment and support. Contact Us to participate, all members are welcome. You can start by just enjoying the boat ride with your fellow members!
